Compliance, plain English
Can breeders text puppy buyers? The rules, simply
Yes — texting is the best channel breeders have. There are just a few rules, and they're all manageable. Plain English below; none of it is legal advice, and your own attorney beats any web page.
Rule 1: Get permission first
The federal law that matters (the TCPA) boils down to: don't text people commercially without their consent. For a breeder, consent is easy to collect honestly — a checkbox on your puppy application or website form that says, in effect, “I agree to receive texts from [your program] about my inquiry and litter updates.” Three details make it solid:
- The box must be unchecked by default — the family ticks it themselves.
- It can't be a condition of joining your list.
- Keep the proof: when they agreed, and what the form said. A saved submission is your protection.
Rule 2: Make leaving easy
Every business texting setup must honor STOPimmediately (they text STOP, the messages end, no exceptions) and respond to HELP. Good texting platforms handle this automatically — you never have to think about it.
Rule 3: Respect quiet hours
No marketing texts before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. in the recipient's time zone. (Answering a family who just texted you at 10 p.m. is conversation, not marketing — that's fine.)
Rule 4: Register your number
Since 2025, US carriers block business texts from unregistered numbers. If you text through a business platform (rather than your personal phone), the number gets registered under a system called A2P 10DLC. It sounds technical; in practice the platform walks you through a short form and approval takes about a week. If a tool offers you “business texting” without mentioning registration, be suspicious.
What about texting from my personal phone?
Person-to-person texting with families you know is normal life, not regulated marketing. The rules above kick in as you scale up — blast updates to a whole waitlist, automated reminders, a dedicated business number. Which is exactly when a platform that handles consent, STOP/HELP, quiet hours, and registration for you stops being a luxury.
